The above images of Gwyneth Paltrow were scanned directly from a printed magazine page at 200 ppi. The zoom in to the eye shows the ReadAllOver halftone pattern using eight colors per pixel at 400 ppi. The zoom out shows resolution at 100 ppi.

Robert M. Case is the developer of the ReadAllOvertm imaging system and file format (.rao).

Covered by three issued and two pending U.S. patents, ReadAllOver is based on digital halftoning that may be easily compressed for transmission and storage.

In contrast to other halftoning methods, ReadAllOver balances abrupt edge detail with smooth transitions, enabling typography and images to be processed simultaneously.

The adjoining images were sampled at 200 ppi for output at 100 ppi. Compressed output is 1.6 bits-per-input pixel with a Structural SIMilarity (SSIM) index of 0.88.

The ReadAllOver system is positioned as an eBook file format competitor to .pdf, .jpg and .jp2. Because of its novelty, ReadAllOver easily may be coupled with DRM and just-in-time delivery to “always-on” client devices for the rendering of complex pages.

ReadAllOver is seen as a value-added software component to a dedicated eBook hardware device offered by a major book retailer.
